- The Star Ledger
Eliminating the age factor, Andrews still is the better choice. He has a comprehensive vision of where the country should be going and can articulate detailed plans for getting there. On any issue -- from health care, to withdrawing from Iraq, to meeting transportation needs, to dealing with soaring gas prices -- Andrews has well-thought-out proposals.
- The Philadelphia Inqurier
However, Andrews has built a solid record in the House as a thoughtful legislator, and he would bring a fresh approach to the challenges facing New Jersey.
Looking at all the issues, Andrews is clearly the most substantive candidate in the Democratic Senate primary race...When it comes to the issues that most New Jerseyans really care about -- high gasoline prices, access to health care and, yes, the Iraq war -- Andrews wins. The Courier-Post endorses his candidacy and urges Democratic voters to pull the lever for him on Tuesday.
Beyond political catch phrases, [Lautenberg] does not provide much detail about what he will do if re-elected. This is not a time to reward someone for past efforts. There are very serious problems facing New Jersey and the nation, and only the best qualified need apply. Andrews, 50, is highly capable of articulating his positions, which include ending President Bush's tax cuts for the rich.
Andrews was the only one with the courage to run...Andrews is more proactive tha[n] Lautenberg, suggesting his own solutions for health coverage and other major problems.
What gives the nudge to Andrews is not so much Lautenberg's age, 84, but the fact he's been in the U.S. Senate for 24 years. When Lautenberg came out of retirement in 2002 to replace Robert Torricelli on the ballot, the assumption was that he'd serve one term. In fact, some thought he'd step down in the middle of his six-year term. Few thought he would run again.
Things obviously change. Still, after 24 years in the Senate, Democrats should send someone else to Washington.
